You may remember pictures from last year when the young people from The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints volunteered to help at our Community Games held in SRC Bede 6th Form College in June, they contacted BCN again this year asking to be involved in another community project, without hesitation, we directed them down to the BELP Horticultural Project in Port Clarence. The projects polytunnel’s supports the schools project ran by Billingham Environmental Links Project, the community garden and orchard are planted, the community raised beds are all taking shape, with the huge faith garden that is planned to create a spiritual area of peace and tranquillity is next big phase of development, followed by the lavender park.
So as any gardener knows there is always work to be done. Roger Black and Deryck Forrest of BELP were on hand to give guidance along with Pat Chambers representing Billingham Legacy Foundation.
Deryck said ‘These young people re potted over 1000 plants, cleared 15 raised beds ready for planting and helped clear a huge area of ground from weeds. The good work delivered through this great volunteering project was the equivalent of 7 – 10 days work, so we want to say a huge thank you to all who helped, it was a fantastic outcome – can we dig it? Yes we can!!! Interested in volunteering and giving a helping hand, call 01642 564077 and ask to speak to Roger Black or Deryck Forrest.
