There continues to be day by day changes down on the allotments in Port Clarence. The number of raised beds seems to be on track to exceed 200 this year with both residents and local groups choosing to get busy and grow their own produce for 2015. BCN met with Barry Malcolm when we were down at Port Clarence recently, he was in the middle of moving some mulch into recently prepared ground.
Barry said ‘We have at least one group a day coming down now to work on their own raised beds, or in the polytunnels so there is always something going on and access to help and advice if you need it.’
He added ‘Churches Together has recently taken up the use of some growing beds, along with the Royal British Legion. We have a lot of local residents now preparing their own boxes ready for planting when the weather improves.’
There is always some work to be done down at the allotments, so if you have time to spare, want to be involved in this project or consider taking on your own raised bed, pop along to Port Clarence, the allotments are just behind the play area – you’ll find a warm welcome and be a regular before you know it!
